Frequently Asked Questions

Products & Sizing

What size hibachi grill should I get?

Depends on how many people you're feeding. For couples or balcony grilling, the 18cm or 26cm width grills are spot on — compact but still big enough for skewers, prawns, and a steak. If you're cooking for the family on weekends, go 80cm or 100cm length. Hosting a bigger do or running a market stall? The 120cm and 150cm models are built for that.

What's the difference between a hibachi grill and a regular BBQ?

A hibachi is a Japanese-style charcoal grill — open top, no lid, and the charcoal sits close to the food. You get serious direct heat and that proper charcoal flavour you just can't get from gas. They're lighter, more portable, and honestly a lot more fun to cook on than a standard barbie. We reckon once you try charcoal, you won't go back to gas.

What's the Hydraulic Height Adjustable Portable Grill?

It's our flagship product — a portable charcoal grill with a hydraulic system that lets you adjust the charcoal tray height while you're cooking. Means you can fine-tune heat without moving food around. It's currently $198 (was $285), made from premium stainless steel, and folds down for easy transport. Great for camping, beach trips, or just the backyard.

Do your pizza ovens run on gas or wood?

All our pizza ovens are wood pellet fired. We carry 4 models ranging from 11" to 13" cooking surfaces, priced between $350 and $460. Wood pellets give you that smoky flavour and hit temperatures around 450°C — proper Neapolitan-style pizza in about 60-90 seconds. Check our pizza oven collection for specs on each model.

What's the Willkon camping range?

Willkon is our camping and outdoor furniture brand. We stock tents from $546 to $1,680, plus camping chairs, folding tables, and utility carts. Everything's designed to pair nicely with our portable grills. Browse the full range in our camping collection.

What are the bundle deals?

We've got four bundle tiers — Starter, Classic, Premium, and Ultimate — that pair a grill with accessories like skewers, chimney starters, and grates. Saves you 15-30% compared to buying everything separately. If you're just getting into hibachi grilling, a bundle is the smartest way to start.

Charcoal & Cooking

What type of charcoal should I use?

Lump hardwood charcoal is the go for hibachi grilling. It lights faster, burns hotter, and gives cleaner flavour than briquettes. Aussie hardwood charcoal from ironbark or red gum is brilliant — you can grab it at most Bunnings or BBQ shops. Avoid self-lighting charcoal with chemical additives; your food will taste like lighter fluid.

How do I light charcoal properly?

Use a chimney starter — it's the easiest and most reliable method. Scrunch up some newspaper or grab a natural firelighter, stick it underneath, fill the chimney with charcoal, and light from the bottom. Give it 15-20 minutes until the top coals are grey with ash, then tip them into your grill. We sell chimney starters that fit our grills perfectly.

How do I control temperature on a hibachi grill?

Three main ways: adjust the amount of charcoal, spread coals out for lower temps or pile them up for searing heat, and manage airflow by how you position food. On our Hydraulic Adjustable Grill, you can raise or lower the charcoal tray to dial in temperature precisely. For standard hibachis, creating a two-zone setup (hot side and cool side) gives you the most control.

How long does charcoal last in a hibachi?

A full load of quality lump charcoal will give you about 45-60 minutes of solid cooking heat. For longer sessions, just add more charcoal to the edges and let it catch from the existing coals — no need to relight. If you're doing a big cook, keep a chimney starter going on the side with a fresh batch ready to tip in.

Shipping & Pickup

Do you offer free shipping?

Yep — free shipping on all grills, and free shipping on any order over $50 Australia-wide. Smaller accessory orders under $50 have a flat shipping fee calculated at checkout. Most orders dispatch within 1-2 business days.

Absolutely. You can collect from our Springvale warehouse at 2/56 Smith Road, Springvale VIC 3171, weekdays 9am to 4pm. Just select "Pickup" at checkout and we'll have it ready — usually within 2 hours.

How long does delivery take?

Melbourne metro orders usually arrive in 2-4 business days. Regional VIC and other capital cities typically 4-7 business days. Remote areas can take a bit longer. You'll get tracking info once your order ships.

Returns & Warranty

What's your returns policy?

We offer 30-day returns on unused products in original packaging. If something's faulty or damaged in transit, get in touch straight away and we'll sort it out — replacement or refund, no dramas. Just email us with your order number and a photo of the issue.

Do your products come with a warranty?

All WillBBQ and Willkon products come with a 12-month warranty covering manufacturing defects. Normal wear from use isn't covered, but if something breaks that shouldn't have, we'll make it right. Keep your order confirmation as proof of purchase.

Care & Maintenance

How do I clean my hibachi grill after cooking?

While the grill's still warm (not scorching), hit the grates with a wire brush to get the cooked-on bits off. Once it's cooled, wipe down the grates and body with a damp cloth. For a deeper clean every few cooks, wash the grates with warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly.

How do I prevent rust on my grill?

Our grills are stainless steel, so they're naturally resistant to rust — but they're not invincible. After cleaning, make sure everything is bone dry before storing. If you're keeping it outside, use a cover. A light wipe with cooking oil on the grates after cleaning adds extra protection.

How should I store my grill when I'm not using it?

Clean it, dry it, and keep it somewhere undercover — garage, shed, or under a decent cover. If you've got one of our portable models, they fold down compact enough to store in a cupboard or car boot. Empty out any leftover ash before storing, because ash holds moisture and that's what causes problems over time.
